2-6 Day Sea Kayaking Tours in the Islands of Loreto Bay National Marine Park

Designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Gulf of California is one of the best winter sea kayaking destinations in North America. Over several days, you’ll paddle through the spectacular waters of Loreto Bay National Marine Park, backed by the high cliffs and sandy beaches of its desert landscapes. The towering escarpments of the Sierra Giganta Mountains will serve as your constant backdrop for an adventure you’ll never forget.

Spend your days kayaking, hiking, and snorkeling in this magnificent setting, with sea lions and dolphins regularly breaking the water’s surface. Blue-footed boobies, pelicans, and frigate birds will be your companions along the journey, as will a colorful array of tropical fish. Each winter, blue whales migrate through the area, while fin, humpback, and sei whales are also occasionally spotted.

Our Islands of Loreto Bay kayaking tours explore the beautiful Islas Danzante and Carmen, with itineraries that extend from three to six days. We offer a motorboat-supported itinerary in which the panga carries all camping gear, food, and supplies for you, including a cooler with ice for cold drinks.

WEATHER-CAUSED TRIP ALTERATIONS

Strong winds and/or rough water conditions sometimes prevent our trips from going as scheduled. We are at the mercy of nature, as well as the local Port Captains who determine if ports are open or closed. In particular, on our La Paz-based trips, winds may prevent us from crossing from the Port to Espiritu Santo Island, which may also be a reason for the Port Captain to close the port or prohibit crossing. In these cases, there are different solutions. Sometimes we have to delay the crossing by a day or two, or have to leave Espiritu Santo Island a day or two early. In these cases, we provide a substitute activity for the day(s) we cannot kayak. If the weather forecast predicts a series of days with strong winds, we also reserve the right to transfer the trip to Magdalena Bay on the Pacific Coast, which is almost always in calm, protected waters. We recognize this isn't ideal; however, we have no control over nature. Most people prefer to still have a trip going, versus no kayak trip at all. Decisions to alter trips are not made until the last minute*, since we are basing our decisions on wind and weather forecasts that can change. Your guides will inform you at the evening orientation meeting if the trip location has changed or the itinerary has been altered. We use apps like Windy or Windfinder Pro to monitor winds and forecasts. The safety and security of our trips is the primary focus of our decisions.

If you purchase Trip Insurance and wish to cancel on the day of the trip, the "Trip Interruption" coverage may apply if Mexican authorities have closed the Port. If you have questions about your coverage, call the toll-free number on your Travel Insurance policy to ask. Neither our guides nor our office staff can determine if coverage will apply. Sea Kayak Adventures reserves the right to modify and alter trip itineraries, and in these circumstances will not provide any refund of trip monies paid.

*Last-minute means no sooner than noon the day prior. Final information will be provided at the evening orientation meeting.

ALL PRICES IN US DOLLARS. We will do our best to adhere to the itineraries and trip descriptions listed on our website. However, tour itineraries or subcontractors (such as taxi, cruise boats, or hotels) may change slightly due to reasons beyond our control, including but not limited to Acts of God, wind, waves, inclement weather or other. We always welcome you to call us to clarify any item - often this is the best way to fully clarify expectations - call us collect or on our toll-free number. You will be sent a pre-trip email with the latest details within a month of your tour - it is your responsibility to check in with us prior to your trip to see if you have all the information you need. We will always do our best to provide you with the best possible tour and to fully meet your expectations to the best of our ability.

    Amazing sea kayak adventure

Mario, Damian, and Ephriam provided an amazing 5 day sea kayak adventure. Saw many whales (several very close to us), dolphins, sea turtles, sea lions, and birds. The tents and sleeping bags/pads were very comfortable. Best of all the food was fresh and wonderful. Mario provided detailed information on whale and marine biology throughout the adventure. The crew catered to our needs and safety, and although some of the sea kayak excursions were challenging they were safe and exciting.

    Incredible biodiversity

We enjoyed 4 days and three nights out of Loreto with Mario, Damien, Karen, Tanya, and Ramon. They were a great team and guided/cared for our group of 11 well. Our group included three families and ranged in age from 15 to 83. We didn’t know each other before hand, but got along well. Our first day was a bit windy and the crossing from Escondido to our camp beach on Carmen, which involved crossing two 2+ miles wide channels was challenging, but fresh tamales, Yellowtail, and margaritas under a spectacular sky rejuvenated everyone. The biodiversity we saw snorkeling here was the best of the trip. Three types of urchins, four types of starfish, lobster, large snails, colorful wrasses, box fish, porcupine fish, damselfish, a large amazingly cryptic stonefish, to name some of the things we saw. As we snacked on chips and salsa before dinner we flipped through the guidebooks they brought along to identify some of what we had seen. With a new moon the stars were seemingly endless and I saw the longest brightest shooting star I’ve seen in my life. The next day we recrossed over to Danzante Island with the wind and currents behind us, which everyone appreciated, and made great time to a beach beneath an arch in the sea cliff for a lunch of fresh triggerfish ceviche and some tide pooling where we saw several types of anemones, sea hares, and colorful nudibranches. After lunch we paddled around the southern tip of the island and partly up the side facing the peninsula. As we made camp we encountered pods of dozens of dolphins. They were to ever present for the rest of the tip. Feeding on huge schools of sardines in the shallows, we encountered them at close range in kayak, from the beach, and while snorkeling. At times I could count more than 20 surfacing at once. The played and jumped and swam under our boats and around and underneath us while swimming. We based at this beach for two days. Food, sunrises, sunsets, and stars continued to enthrall. We went blacklighting for scorpions (only found 1 small one). On our layover day we paddled up to honeymoon bay for a short hike to a great overlook which allowed us to see what we had paddles the first day, more snorkeling, more encounters with dolphins, and turquoise waters full of giant sardine schools being dive bombed by pelicans and frigate birds wheeled overhead. That evening we walked down the beach to another hike and overlook and leaned about the desert adapted plant communities on the island with Damien. On our final day we paddled back across to the main peninsula by the hidden harbor at Escondido Bay and snorkeled at Coyote Point. We were at the take out beach in the early afternoon and enjoyed a final dinner with all the participants and guides together on New Years Eve at Mi Loreto across from the cathedral- but we were all too tired to make it to midnight!

    Amazing

My wife and I planned our four-day trip from Loreto as not only something we could do with our two teenagers, but with my 83-year-old mother. Mom is in great shape and was totally game to sleep in a tent, and had an amazing time. Our guide, Mario, and his crack crew—Damian, Tanya, Ramon—quickly let us know we were in good hands. Damian took Mom in his kayak, and even in a day full of fierce headwinds he got them where they needed to go alongside the rest of us. Mario kept the group on track with his deep knowledge of local wildlife (especially whales), while Ramon and Tanya locked down top-notch meal prep. (More guacamole, please? Sin duda.) We didn’t get any whales on our trip, but we got dolphins. Oh, the dolphins. So many dolphins. We paddled with them. We swam with them. We watched them going back and forth from our campsite. We listened to their blowholes from inside our tents. They first appeared after we’d already gone ashore, so Ramon took the lot of us out on the motorized support boat for a closer look. The provided camping equipment made sleeping comfortable, the night skies were incredible, the paddling was terrific, the company was fabulous, the staff was outstanding and the meals were first rate. That’s a lot of reasons to recommend this outfit, each more valid than the rest.
